Wilton Werbe Clary was sentenced to life imprisonment Monday afternoon in Hendersonville after he confessed to premeditated murder of Pamela Denise Durham during a brief trial Miss Durham. 16. was a voice student of his. Gov. Jim Hunt proposed Monday a 3-cents per gallon increase in the state tax on gasoline and coupled it with an income lax credit of up to $22 50 a year aimed at offsetting the higher levy for individuals and families. Hunt also recommended an unspecified increase in the state tax on alcoholic beverages and increased fees for truck registration, driver's licenses and various other highway related fees. The body of a small black male adult was found in the Chattahoochee River near Atlanta on Monday. The body has been identified as 21-year-old Jimmy Ray Payne, who was last seen at his southwest Atlanta home five days ago. Payne's Continued On Back Page Emergency Management Council Meeting There will be a meeting of Emergeny Management Council members at 7;30 p.m. on May 6. in the Commissioners Meeting Room Ken Faulkner. Emergency Management Coordinator, will explain the function of the council. A discussion will be made on problems and solutions so that the county will be prepared for any kind of emergency situation. Pre-School At Mill Spring There will be a pre-school orientation at Mill Spring School on Tuesday. May 5, at 8;30 a m. for all children in Mill Spring School district who will begin kindergarten this fall. Parents should accompany their children and bring the child's birth certificate and immunization records. To be eligible for kindergarten a child must be 5 years old on or before October 15, 1981. Any student who did not attend kindergarten this year and will be starting first grade in the fall should also attend the orientation. If you are unable to attend, please call the school at 894-8904 to register your child. Girls Track Wednesday Conference Meet at Edneyville Forest Fires There were two woods fires Monday afternoon about 4:30. The Tryon Fire Dpeartment was called to the Huntingwood section of Rock Cut Road and the Columbus Fire Department was called to A B. Taylor property on White Oak Mountain. The firemen with the aid of the Forestry Service put the fires out. Talks To Congressional Delegation Jim Lowry, who is chairman of the North Carolina Indian Affairs Commission, addressed the North Carolina Congressional Delegation in Washington Tuesday concerning Indian programs. Civic League Meets Friday The Civic League of Landrum will meet Friday, May 1st at 3 p m at the Civic Center in Landrum. The program will feature “Dolls of Other Countries and the United States'' from the collection of Miss Jody Brown and Mrs Ralph Cash The hostesses for the afternoon will be Edith Manor. Hazel Young, Lois Ayers. Helen Bauvelt, and Dorothea Hambel. All members are asked to attend this meeting which will be the last until September. Homecoming Columbus United Methodist Church on Peake St . Columbus, will celebrate their 3rd annual Homecoming on Sunday. May 3rd at 11 a m services.
